Whaleback Fire Forest Restoration Project

The Boone and Crockett Club has a long history advocating for policies to support wildland forest management. In the early 1900s, the Club worked to develop and pass legislation that created the National Forest System and the U.S. Forest Service to manage these forests. More recently, we worked with Congress to give the federal government new tools and direction on forest management, helping pass legislation in 2003 expediting thinning in the wildland-urban interface, in 2010 and 2014 creating Good Neighbor Authority to administer forest health projects, and in 2018 protecting the budget of the Forest Service against the rising costs of fighting wildfires. In 2021, the Club worked with members of Congress to include more than $8 billion in funding for forest resiliency projects in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

These policy actions help our conservation partners like the Mule Deer Foundation that are implementing active forest management projects through stewardship agreements with the Forest Service. This summer, the Boone and Crockett Club supported an MDF project in northern Colorado to install wildlife guzzlers that were burned in the Whaleback Fire. Our partners at MDF developed this story map to help visualize the stewardship projects that are making a difference for forests and wildlife in the West.
