For more than four years, one trail camera was aimed at the same tree 24/7. That camera caught just about every awesome thing that wanders along northwest Montana’s Rocky Mountain Front. There are wolves and hares, rutting elk and skunks. There are skittish coyotes, and perhaps the craziest of all, there are bears, lots of bears that love one particular tree.

There is a place on Montana’s Rocky Mountain Front that attracts all that is wild. It just so happens that this place is on the Boone and Crockett Club’s Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch . The place is called The Campsite, and it’s truly special. Here, grizzly bears chase moose, mature mule deer bucks plow through snow drifts, mountain lions slink by at night, bull elk literally run into trees, and so much more. And perhaps the most beautiful thing? It’s all caught on video.

Put your boots on because it’s time to head over to Montana’s Rocky Mountain Front. On the Club’s Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch , we’re a tad voyeuristic when it comes to wildlife there. From elk to mule deer and badgers to bears, there are plenty of claws, teeth, antlers, and horns to catch on camera.

For five months in 2022, a trail camera posted on a fence next to a riparian area caught the intimate travels of both predator and prey. Grizzlies, lions, elk, bobcats, mule deer—everything took a turn walking along, scooting under, hopping over, and plowing through this fence near Dupuyer Creek that runs along Montana’s Rocky Mountain Front.

Tine and Tooth, Claw and Cowboy — Welcome to Montana’s Rocky Mountain Front. Just southeast of Glacier National Park and the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, the Boone and Crockett Club is conducting an experiment. On the Club’s Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch , we’re running cattle alongside grizzly bears, wolves, elk, bobcats—the list goes on. The biggest threat to the operation, though, has been drought. Ranch managers and the Club are currently looking at innovative ways to cope, and we’ll have more details on that in the future. For now, let’s talk wildlife.

Winter came early this year to the Rocky Mountain Front. On the Club’s Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch in northwest Montana, the plains slam into the Rocky Mountains in dramatic fashion—and the weather can be intense. Winds in some places on the Front average 18 mph every single day. That doesn’t seem to stop the big game, predators, and other woodland creatures from going about their business as usual.
