Elk, Deer Research Honored by B&C

A big-game research program in northeast Oregon is the recipient of the Boone and Crockett Club's inaugural Conservation and Stewardship Award.

The Starkey Project, established in 1989 by the U.S. Forest Service, is one of the most comprehensive field research programs in history. Research trials in an enclosed 25,000-acre working landscape measure the effects of timber management, livestock grazing and recreation on elk and deer populations. Results help guide resource-management decisions across the West.

Victory in Maine but Conservation not Out of the Woods

Maine voters rejected Question 1, a ballot initiative to ban sportsmen's use of bait, hounds, and traps. If passed it would have negatively affected Maine hunters and the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife's ability to manage the states black bear population. But the vote was really about more than just bear hunting methods, said the Boone and Crockett Club today.

B&C Supports new Funding for Conservation

Four Boone and Crockett Club members are serving on a panel charged with developing new funding mechanisms for conservation. The goal is bridging the funding gap between game and nongame species - a concept heartily endorsed by the Club.

B&C Welcomes New Conservation Leaders

Thirty-six conservation pros from across the U.S. are about to embark on a training odyssey described as "one of the most far-reaching professional development initiatives ever undertaken" in natural resource conservation. The Boone and Crockett Club welcomes these ambitious new leaders.

Welcoming a New Leader in Fisheries, Wildlife Research

Boone and Crockett Club professional member John Organ has been appointed to lead a key science engine behind the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Cooperative Research Units provide most of the applied wildlife and fisheries management research funded through the Pittman-Robertson and Dingell-Johnson Acts. Conservation luminary and Boone and Crockett member Ding Darling established the program in 1935. Currently there are 40 units at universities in 38 states, together staffed by some 120 scientists with graduate faculty appointments.
